Inventor of the universal plug
The “red universal plug” made our company famous: we are a leader in the field of universal plugs. Since 1941, we have stood for innovative and reliable fixing technology as a medium-sized family-owned business.
Countless tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts rely on the original TRI plug, the first of its kind, which we invented in 1973. With more than 1,200 branded plugs and fixing systems, we also offer solutions for every challenge – from cavity fixings, expansion plugs, and heavy-duty anchors to sanitary fixings, frame fixings, and insulation fixings.
We continue to evolve as well: since 2024, our customers have been able to obtain high-quality plugs and screws from a single source. Because we know that strong connections are the be-all and end-all of every construction project. Our new screw range includes drywall screws, gypsum fibreboard screws, timber construction screws, adjusting screws, as well as decking screws, facade screws, and sealing screws.
All products are carefully tested, inspected, and optimized for the specific requirements of the construction and trade sectors. What made the TRI
revolutionary:
As the construction industry and building materials market underwent noticeable change in the 1960s and 1970s, with new materials entering the market, TOX was faced with a key question: what should a fixing look like that could reliably meet this wide variety of requirements? This question gave rise to the “universal plug” project. After months of intensive testing and prototypes, the result was finalized in 1973: the TRI – and with it, an idea that still holds strong today.
The TRI combines features that make it a true all-rounder: it anchors securely in almost all building materials and automatically adapts to the substrate – depending on the material, it either expands or knots. High holding values and consistent functionality have made it a firmly established part of the product range for decades.
At the same time, a variant was also developed: the TRIKA in white, with a collar that prevents it from slipping into the drill hole when the screw is inserted. Both stand for the same commitment: developing solutions that are carefully thought through in every detail and prove themselves in practice.
From Buttons to Plugs
TOX began in a small workshop in Berlin. Since then, the company has continuously evolved in the field of fixing technology – shaped by ideas, developments and milestones that continue to have an impact today.
